Breakfast with my boys

Eating breakfast together as a family is one of the best ways to start the day. 

The boys love breakfast time and I really try to make a conscious effort to feed them a balanced meal to start their day. We also talk about the day ahead, what the boys are hoping to do, if they have anything on their minds and setting our intentions for the day in a positive and happy way.

With back to school truly underway, breakfast is a great time to sit down together for even just 15 mins and talk about the day ahead.  Put their mind at rest with any concerns (like spelling tests) we talk about what we’re looking forward to. The main goal is to instill a happy, positive experience so the boys start with a positive mindset ready for the day ahead.

For breakfast I always give the boys a few simple options, including fruit such as bananas, apples, grapes, strawberries, melon, pineapple, pomegranate and peaches. I try and mix it up so they have something different and lots of variety, often served as a fruit smoothie which they love.   

A firm favourite of Finn and Harry is American Style pancakes, they are really easy to make and preparation time is super quick. If you are really organized, you can make the batter the night before and keep it in the fridge – I think it actually makes them taste better.  Then in the morning just pan fry the batter in a drop of olive oil in a hot pan. The boys spread one heaped teaspoon (15g, 80kcal) of nutella on their pancakes and then finely slice some bananas to go on top – they absolutely love them and it’s a great way to get them to eat fruit with something extra tasty.

Our breakfasts have become a very special time as a family and we love to prepare them together and then all sit down for our morning chats. It’s also a great time to praise the children for sleeping well, getting dressed independently and contributing to the breakfast preparation. We have a points chart and we love sticking new stickers in the morning and planning how the boys can achieve more throughout the day.
